Carlos Maldonado
Before his stroke, Carlos Maldonado lived an active life. At 35, he enjoyed spending time with friends and family, playing basketball, and staying busy with work. But everything changed when he experienced sudden symptoms that led to a diagnosis of an ischemic stroke.
The stroke affected the right side of his brain, leaving him with weakness and numbness on his left side. Tasks that once felt routine became difficult.
When Carlos arrived at San Joaquin Valley Rehabilitation Hospital, an inpatient medical rehabilitation hospital located in Fresno, he faced both physical and emotional challenges. “Before therapy, I felt helpless,” he shared. “I couldn’t do things on my own.”
With the support of his rehabilitation team and the encouragement of his family, Carlos began intensive physical and occupational therapy to rebuild strength, mobility, and coordination. By his third day, he started noticing meaningful improvements. Walking became easier, and he regained movement in his hand. “Every morning I woke up feeling stronger,” he said.
Carlos made steady gains. He practiced walking, stretching, and strengthening exercises, gradually rebuilding his confidence and independence. One of his proudest milestones was being able to shower on his own again, which once seemed out of reach. Another breakthrough came when he was able to climb stairs during therapy, an important step toward returning to work and daily life.
Carlos credits both his care team and his family for helping him stay motivated. “They pushed me like trainers,” he said. “They kept telling me, ‘You’ve got this.’”
Carlos achieved his goal—walking out of the hospital independently. Now continuing his recovery through outpatient therapy, he is focused on getting back to work and returning to the activities he loves most.
Reflecting on his journey, Carlos shared, “I learned I’m more resilient than I thought.”
Carlos, your determination and strength have been truly inspiring. It has been an honor to be part of your recovery journey, and we wish you continued success as you move forward.
