Christina Tate
Christina Tate lived an active, independent life in Selma, California. But after needing back surgery, even simple daily tasks became challenging.
Knowing she needed additional support before returning home, Christina came to San Joaquin Valley Rehabilitation Hospital, an inpatient medical rehabilitation hospital in Fresno focused on helping patients regain strength and independence.
Although she had never been to a rehab hospital before, Christina felt a sense of comfort early on. “I had been praying about where to go,” she shared. “When I arrived, I immediately felt welcomed and taken care of.”
Working with her physical and occupational therapy teams, Christina began focusing on stretching, strengthening her arms and legs, and walking with a walker. As she progressed, therapy shifted toward real-life movements, such as stepping over curbs, navigating ramps, and practicing getting in and out of a car.
With time and consistency, Christina began to notice meaningful progress.
“I remember the moment I realized I was getting better,” she said. “I was able to stand up from my bed and walk to the bathroom on my own—even without the walker. That was huge for me.”
Her recovery wasn’t without challenges. In addition to her back surgery, she was also recovering from a sprained ankle. But her care team adjusted her therapy plan to meet her needs each day, helping her build strength safely and steadily.
By the time of her discharge, Christina was walking on her own and only occasionally using a cane when out in the community. She was able to return to driving, caring for her dog, and managing most of her daily activities independently.
Christina’s message to others who may feel uncertain about rehabilitation: “Don’t worry about it,” she said. “It’s hard work, but you’ll feel supported and encouraged the whole time!”
Christina, your determination has been truly inspiring! It has been an honor to be part of your recovery journey, and we wish you continued strength and success.
