Patricia Burke

After a fall resulted in a hip fracture, Patricia Burke underwent surgery at Clovis Community Hospital before being referred to San Joaquin Valley Rehabilitation Hospital in Fresno, California.

Patricia came to SJV Rehab focused on regaining her mobility and returning to the life she loved. She did not want to rely on a wheelchair long-term, and she was ready to do the work needed to rebuild her strength, balance, and confidence.

During her inpatient stay, Patricia participated in an intensive rehabilitation program designed to help her move more safely and independently. Her therapy began with learning to use a wheelchair safely, then progressed to using a walker as she gained strength and confidence.

Patricia credited her therapy team with encouraging her through difficult moments and helping her stay focused on her goals. She also shared appreciation for the kindness she experienced throughout the hospital, noting that the nurses, therapists, and staff helped her feel welcomed and supported.

As Patricia progressed, she began walking farther and with more confidence. Each step brought her closer to the independence she wanted to regain and the routines she hoped to return to, including volunteering in her granddaughter’s second-grade classroom.

After completing inpatient rehabilitation, Patricia continued building on her progress through outpatient balance therapy at SJV Rehab. At home and in therapy, she used the skills she had learned, pacing herself and applying what she practiced.

“I learned that I can do anything I put my mind to,” she said. “Quitters never win. I was determined to get back to some normalcy in my life.”
