Veronica poses for a photo at San Joaquin Valley Rehabilitation Hospital

Veronica Andrade

Veronica Andrade was no stranger to medical challenges, having undergone several spinal and brain surgeries in the past. But this time was different. Her latest surgery left her facing a recovery unlike any she had experienced before. For the first time, she required intensive rehabilitation, and the uncertainty of what lay ahead made her feel uneasy.

While she was grateful for the exceptional care she received at Stanford, Veronica was eager to return closer to home. She chose San Joaquin Valley Rehabilitation Hospital, an inpatient medical rehabilitation hospital in Fresno, to begin the next phase of her recovery.

Upon her arrival, Veronica was feeling as though she had lost everything. She couldn’t eat by mouth, her speech was significantly affected, and severe changes in her vision and balance made her fearful about how she would return to her job and the hobbies she loved. Even sleep felt impossible. Despite these challenges, she committed fully to her therapy, never missing a single session.

Day by day, she made progress. Her swallowing improved with specialized exercises, and her speech and mobility grew stronger. As she regained her abilities, she also regained excitement for the little joys in life—like food. She began compiling a list of dishes she couldn’t wait to enjoy again, even gathering restaurant recommendations from the staff!

Now, as she prepares to leave San Joaquin Valley Rehabilitation Hospital, Veronica is walking, talking, eating, and drinking—ready to continue her recovery in outpatient therapy. More than anything, she is looking forward to one special moment: sharing a meal with her 8-year-old son.

“You have to enjoy something every day with someone you love,” she shared. “Even if it’s a banana with Nutella!”

We are honored to have been part of Veronica’s journey and wish her continued success in all that lies ahead!
